Oh-en Tanaka Biography

Oh-en Tanaka was born 1917 in Hiroshima. He learned his skillful techniques and painting style from Keiun Miyagawa, a highly renowned Kyoto artist, after World War II. He was influenced by both the Rinpa (c.a. 1600- ) and the Maruyama-Shijo school (c.a. 1750- ) of painting. The Rinpa style embodies a classical Japanese sense for decorativeness, delicate coloration, and abstraction, combined with a keen study of the visible world with subjects from medieval literature and nature themes. Its traditional, strong design and purely Japanese qualities have influenced the development of the Japanese art scene. The Maruyama-Shijo style incorporates realistic aspects based on Western influenced perspectives and chiaroscuro, yet retains traditional techniques and themes. Tanaka also acquired the technique of Yamato-e (Japanese-style) school of paintings, which is shown in his period paintings. Tanaka 's versatility in subject matter, superb mastery of color, and exquisite composition puts him in a league with the great masters of the above schools of painting such as Sakai Hoitsu (1761-1829) of the Rinpa school and Maruyama Okyo (1733-1795), founder of the Maruyama-Shijo school of painting.
